. The rate of intestinal absorption depends not only on the mode of ingestion and the chemical nature of nutrients ingested, but largely on the regulatory gastrointestinal motility processes and the digestive‐absorptive capacity of the gastrointestinal tract. This review is mainly concerned with modes of nutrient absorption and their regulatory mechanisms. Modulation of intestinal absorptive processes possibly seems to be a valuable therapeutic strategy in various metabolic (diabetes mellitus) and gastrointestinal diseases.
