Oncology in an important research subject at the Free University of Amsterdam and, in medical education, the role of oncology is more prominent than it was a few years ago. In 1991 a new curriculum started with an oncology course at the beginning of the second year of training. The aim of this course was to teach students basic oncology principles, which would then be discussed more fully in the function‐specific courses of the curriculum at a later stage. Simulataneously, students are taught in problem‐orientated way to use this basic knowledge on real patient problems. The first experiecne with this new curriculum are discussed.
