A core curriculum for a post‐basic course in cancer nursing initiated by the Commission of the European Communities' ‘Europe Against Cancer’ programme has been prepared by the European Oncology Nursing Society (EAC‐EONS, 1991). For the purpose of gaining agreement on the content and implementation of the core curriculum throughout Europe, a consensus conference was held in London in January 1991 (see EJCC 1:1, p. 8). Following the consensus conference, the core curriculum has been translated into many European languages, and courses at different levels have been developed from the curriculum. The implementation of the approved core curriculum will contribute towards making cancer nursing a powerful force in establishing high standards of quality care for cancer patients.
