The aim of this article is to review the literature on the diary method and describe its use within the context of a nursing research project. The author utilized the diary method when investigating the experiences of individuals after cranial radiotherapy. The diary provided a suitable method for eliciting the experiences of participants. Data from the diaries provided the basis for semi‐structured interviews and produced a descriptive account of the phenomenon of somnolence syndrome. The study indicated that more information should be provided for patients on the side‐effects that occur after radiotherapy has finished, as participants found somnolence syndrome to be an experience that was frightening and not adequately explained.
