Current work on potato breeding at the Institute for Potato Research of the Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Sciences is reviewed. Somaclonal variation is being exploited to obtain new cell lines, from which promising potato material is being regenerated. Various methods are being used in an attempt to select for pest resistance in cell lines. Genetic engineering methods are being tested to introduce genes for resistance to potato X potexvirus, Leptinotarsa decemlineata and fungus diseases.
