Several cases of Ralstonia solanacearum were detected in France in 1994 and 1995, on tomato, aubergine and in a field in an experimental potato station. All these cases have been eradicated, and strong measures have been applied, including an official control Order dated 1996–03–28. An intensive monitoring programme has been carried out since 1993 on potato production in France, and in particular on seed‐potato production. No new case has been found since 1995 and the whole potato production system is considered to be free from the bacterium. Since 1996, a national survey has been carried out on rivers and the bacterium has not been found in water or in Solanum dulcamara. A national programme for testing seed potatoes from The Netherlands, arising from the EU Decision to authorize complementary controls, has given negative results. Imports of ware potatoes from various authorized sources has been reinforced since 1995. Specific measures have been applied for Egyptian potatoes since 1995, with systematic testing; 5 contaminated lots were intercepted in spring 1996.
