The decision‐support system PRO_PLANT was developed in Nordrhein‐Westfalen (DE) to help farmers to reduce the input of plant protection products to a minimum while giving them economic returns as good or even better than high‐input routine sprays. PRO_PLANT now covers cereal diseases, growth regulators in cereals, sugarbeet diseases, rape pests and weeds in maize. Meteorological data from the Deutscher Wetterdienst is one of the most important elements used in the system. PRO_PLANT is now used all over Germany by official and private advisers, as well as by farmers as a stand‐alone version. Experience over recent years shows that farmers can reduce fungicide inputs by almost 30%, by applying fewer treatments or reducing doses.
