In order to export citrus and subtropical fruits, Israel has to regulate and control Ceratitis capitata , to ensure that harvested fruits are free from the pest. Legislative provisions allow the establishment of a centralized Control Programme. Monitoring and control operations are carried out by a central unit, funded by growers and subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture. Monitoring in orchards is performed with trimedlure traps. Control is by aerial spraying with malathion bait. The Inspection Service verifies the absence of C. capitata in fruits for export. When required, the fruits may also be subject to a post‐harvest cold treatment, on shipboard (USA) or on shore (Japan).
