Two field trial protocols which assess the effects of pesticides on arthropod natural enemies are described. One approach uses large plots (≥ 1 ha) while the other uses small plots (≥100 m 2 ) surrounded by plastic barriers, to prevent re‐invasion of treated areas. The advantages and disadvantages of the two methods are discussed and sampling programmes for both described. The analysis and interpretation of the results are discussed in relation to risk classification which determines risk management practices to be undertaken.
