Salt restriction fragments of a highly conserved plasmid of Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. sepedonicus were cloned in pUC19. Five recombinant plasmids were selected and used in nonradioactive dot‐blot DNA‐DNA hybridizations. Results show that the probe hybridized specifically with the DNA of the pathogen and not with DNA extracted from other closely related organisms or potato‐associated bacteria. This safe, rapid and specific procedure may help in the diagnosis of potato ring rot, which is at present difficult and very time‐consuming.
