Propagating material of fruit trees, citrus and grapevine moving in international trade has a substantial risk of being virus‐infected. Developing countries in particular need to be able to import high‐quality « virus‐free » material from reliable sources. Even if such material is obtained, its multiplication and distribution entail risks of reinfection, observed in practice on many occasions, unless careful supervision by trained staff can be ensured. In the Mediterranean Region and the Near East, FAO, in conjunction with EPPO, is working towards a scheme in which special institutes in individual countries (France, Italy, Spain …) cooperate in an inter‐country programme for production of virus‐free stock and for training in its use. The establishment of a Centre for the Improvement of Mediterranean Horticultural Crops at Valenzano, Bari (IT) is a major element of this scheme.
