Concern about pesticide residues and the unprofitability of classical treatments through secondary complications has led to a new approach to plant protection problems. Applications must be based on the assessment of their necessity and full account must be taken of the advantages offered by various possibilities of biological control (introduction of parasites or predators, their mass‐breeding, genetical control, use of attractants) and other procedures (breeding for resistance, cultural measures). Close co‐operation between the various sectors of research involved is recommended.
