. 1. The tendency of Euptychia libye butterflies to oviposit with greater likelihood on isolated plants than on members of clumps is evident in the field and can be duplicated under controlled conditions in the laboratory. 2. The causes and effects of this behaviour and the difficulties inherent in inferring preference from egg distributions in the field are discussed.
