It is about 150 years since the publication of the original descriptions of the disorder now termed Graves' disease (toxic diffuse goitre, exophthalmic goitre, Von Basedow's disease) (Parry, 1825; Graves, 1835; Von Basedow, 1840) and over 60 years since Hashimoto's thyroiditis (struma lymphomatosa) was first described (Hashimoto, 1912). However, until the past 15 years, there was little understanding of possible pathogenic mechanisms in these disorders. At the present time, notwithstanding several persistent points of contention and gaps in our knowledge, it appears that Grave's disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis are most probably closely related primary immunological disorders.
