Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral disorder, but despite intensive clinical, immunological, haematological and microbiological investigations, the precise aetiology remains elusive. Similarly current treatment regimes serve only to ameliorate the ulceration— there is still no reliable and safe means of preventing recurrence. This paper reviews current data concerning clinical and aetiopathological aspects of RAS and details of management.
