Summary The erythema action spectra between 280 nm and 400 nm for Balnetar® bath, Spiritus carbonis detergens bath and 5% crude coal tar in white petrolatum were determined in normal skin with a monochromator. Crude coal tar gave the strongest late erythema phototoxicity and presented the widest wavelength range, from 330 to 400 nm. The late erythema phototoxicity of Spiritus carbonis detergens was somewhat weaker and ranged from 350 to 380 nm. Balnetar did not induce any late erythema phototoxicity. With all three preparations the late phototoxic erythema developed 2–3 h earlier on the tar‐treated sites than on the control areas. Based on the coal‐tar photo‐toxic effects, the concept‘phototoxicity is analysed.
