Summary Mycobacterium chelonei (pre abscessus) is an atypical mycobacterium which is an uncommon human pathogen. There have been infrequent reports that implicate the organism in both superficial infection and overwhelming septicaemia. A cast of an insulin‐dependent diabetic who developed injection abscesses which were due to M. chelonei is reported. This case stresses the importance of adequate sterilization of needles and syringes and may provide further evidence to support the suggestion that diabetics ought to be provided with disposable, once‐only equipment.
