Summary Remission of acne is unlikely to be due to a reduction in sebum production as this remains increased despite the improvement. To investigate the possibility that remission may be due to changes in the composition of sebum, we have measured these changes in males of similar ages with severe acne, severe acne that was improving, and previous severe acne. There were no differences in the rates of synthesis of the five major sebaceous lipids between the three groups, and we conclude that remission of acne is unlikely to be due to changes in the composition of sebum.
