Summary Miss C. W., aged 5years, had had problens with her left thumb for over 6 months. The tip of the thumb was red and swollen and there was fine scalling (Fig, 1).The nail itself was very thick and ragged.Much oh the thickness, however, was apparent rather than real, owing to subungual hyperkeratosis at the tip which was pushing up and distorting the nail. The colour of the nail itself was grey rather than pink. All other nails on the hands and feet were normal. Except for slight discomfort there were no other symptoms. Examination for fungus and candida was negative.
