Summary The distribution of immunoglobulins and the C3 component of complement (C3) in the skin of 29 patients with various forms of pemphigus was studied. Biopsies, from clinically uninvolved skin, were taken from three different sites and perilesional skin was taken when lesions were present. Thirteen patients (45%) who were studied had intercellular deposits of IgG and C. There was no significant variation between sites. Ten patients (34%), in cutaneous remission, were negative at all sites. We conclude that in pemphigus, a biopsy for direct immunofluorescence can be taken from any suitable site on the skin surface.
