Summary The aim of this study was to obtain a detailed description of the histology of normal vulval skin in relation to age and position on the vulva. At all positions on the vulva, the thickness of the keratin, epithelial and dermal layers increased during the reproductive years. The number of rete pegs per unit area was maximal when the epithelial layer was thickest. After the menopause, a slow and progressive atrophy occurred. Mitotic activity in the epithelial layer was low but maximal during the reproductive years. The presence of dermal hyaline change was rare.
