Summary Coal tar is a most useful mode of therapy in psoriasis and chronic eczema. Provided proper precautions and indications are observed, it has many advantages over topical steroid therapy, especially in the management of chronic plaque type psoriasis. Its value has been seriously underestimated in recent years and a whole generation of patients and doctors has grown up without exploiting to the full its many different therapeutic effects in diseases of the skin.
