Summary We have tested eleven non‐steroid anti‐inflammatory agents and two antioxidants, known to have prostaglandin synthesis inhibitory activity, for their ability to suppress irritant‐induced epidermal thickening in the guinea‐pig. We have found that salicylates and indomethacin were the most active. From previous experience, this activity is thought to correspond to the behaviour of these drugs in human skin. No anti‐inflammatory activity was demonstrated by the antioxidants and therefore the unifying concept of prostaglandin synthesis inhibition as an explanation for suppression of inflammation is questioned.
