Summary A young woman taking high doses of oxytetracycline for acne vulgaris during prolonged heavy sun exposure developed signs suggestive of hepatic cutaneous porphyria, especially blistering and fragility of the dorsa of the hands. Porphyrin levels in blood, urine and stool were normal. Abnormal photobiological skin responses were noted in the shortwave ultraviolet spectrum, the degree of abnormality being directly related to the dose of oxytetracycline.
