Summary A 13‐year‐old patient presented at the dermatology clinic with cicatricial alopecia. In infancy he had undergone scalp vein infusion during the treatment of gastro‐enteritis. The substance causing the damage was most probably sodium bicarbonate. This has never been previously reported as an aetiological factor in cicatricial alopecia.
