Summary Two cases of neonatal lupus erythematosus are described. The rash is characteristically present at birth, involves the face, scalp and upper trunk, usually resolving by 6 months of age. Complications include, anaemia, thrombocytopenia and heart involvement (heart block and subendocardial fibrosis). Two possible pathogenic mechanisms (placental transfer either of maternal antibodies or a virus) are discussed.
