The role of chronic inflammation in the pathogenesis of asthma and allergic diseases is now well established. In view of this it would seem important to more accurately define the mechanisms by which inflammatory processes are initiated and propagated in susceptible hosts. In particular, one ultimate goal of asthma research must be to define those 'differences' between asthmatic and nonasthmatic subjects which result in the development of chronic bronchial inflammation. Many of the studies presented at this symposium were concerned with the mechanisms by which inflammatory processes are initiated, and with the complex interaction between genetic factors and the environment which results in loss of tolerance and 'auto-immunc' disease. In addition, some interesting new data on the regulation of IgE synthesis and the distribution of IgE Fc receptors were presented.
