Arachidonic acid metabolites of both the lipoxygenase and cyclo‐oxygenase pathways have been implicated in biological mechanisms in a variety of tissues. Their real significance in the pathophysiology of disease, particularly as mediators of inflammation and in the regulation of the immune response, is poorly understood. In this review Oliver Cromwell focuses on those topics discussed at the meeting which were of particular relevance to allergy and asthma.
