Summary Fourteen patients with extrinsic type bronchial asthma had pulmonary ventilation, lung volume and gas transfer measurements at rest and on exercise, carried out during a control period and again at 2 weeks and 12 months whilst on disodium cromoglycate. A significant improvement in forced expiratory volume, vital capacity and the ratio of residual volume to total lung capacity and in the exercise gas transfer, was observed at 12 months. The improved pulmonary function measurements agree with the clinical assessment of the improvement obtained in these patients whilst on disodium cromoglycate.
