Summary In this paper the writer looks at the population of ‘deafblind’ children, stressing the individuality of the child and the special problems created, not only in management, but also in diagnosis and assessment. The inherent dangers of inappropriate and hasty judgements which may lead to misinterpretation of the child's attempts to communicate are also discussed.
