In 1973 Wendy Knowles * and I began designing an approach to language improvement for mentally retarded children. By 1977 it had become the Derbyshire Language Scheme (DLS), a system of language assessment and related teaching activities. The DLS had been implemented at ESN(S) schools and proved to be equally useful in ESN(M) schools and pre‐school diagnostic units.
