SUMMARY The provision of special care units for the severely physically and mentally handicapped preschool child is discussed. Types of handicap and ethnic origin of the children passing through such a special care unit in a two year period are considered. Management of the special care unit is discussed and the need for a multidisciplinary approach to the care of the child emphasized.
