steatorrhoea (Bowers et al, 2000). However Octreotide is unlikely to affect the angiodysplasia itself. Statins show cholesterol-independent vascular effects. A biphasic response has been documented in vitro: at low doses they promote increased nitric oxide production as well as survival, migration and differentiation of endothelial progenitor cells. At high doses they inhibit angiogenesis (SkaletzRorowski et al, 2004; Li & Losardo, 2007). We describe the first case where statins have been successfully used to arrest bleeding in angiodysplasia. As statins are in widespread use and have a relatively low frequency of side effects, we suggest that therapy with a statin should be considered in these patients and may also be effective in other patients with angiodysplasia.
