S ummary . A rapid and cheap single‐step bacterial‐binding assay for the detection of cell‐membrane molecules is described. It offers the opportunity to correlate antigen expression with cell morphology and cytochemistry and gives an indicagtion of the quantitiy of a cell surface molecule. The value of this procedure is demonstrated by the analysis of spontaneously grwoing and differentiating cultures of the human myeliod leukaemia line HL‐60 with monoclonal antibodies.
