S ummary . The cellular basis of normal antibody formation is reviewed, and the stages are indicated at which the process may be interrupted in order to prevent the formation of autoantibodies. Evidence is presented for several types of interruption, including clonal elimination of lymphocytes, blocking of receptors, active suppression, and target blocking.
