S ummary . The survival of reticulocytes carrying HL‐A antigens is reduced in patients with circulating cytotoxic HL‐A antibodies. The survival of mature red cells is also reduced in these patients but to a lesser degree. Both mature red cells and reticulocytes survive longer in patients without circulating cytotoxic antibodies than reticulocytes (but not mature red cells) in a cytotoxic environment. The significance of these findings is discussed.
