S ummary . The temporary retention in the intestine of radioactive iron ( 59 Fe) has been compared with that of a radioactive non‐absorbed marker ( 131 BaSO 4 ) using a large area liquid scintillation whole‐body counter. There was no temporary retention of radioactive iron when given with a meal to normal subjects. However, a proportion of the radioactive iron was temporarily retained when given as labelled haemoglobin.
