S ummary . The serum iron, iron binding capacity and transferrin saturation has been estimated in a random sample of the Welsh population. The results indicate that iron deficient erythropoiesis is not uncommon, being present in 22 per cent of women and 6 per cent of men. Iron deficiency has only a low correlation with haemoglobin concentration and it is commonly found in subjects with a normal haemoglobin concentration by conventional standards.
