Summary: A method of measuring free globin has been described. Human erythrocytes are shown to contain free globin and levels have been established for a group of haematologically normal individuals. Storage experiments indicate the importance of performing the free globin assay on fresh blood. Evidence is presented that this free globin is probably a mixture of α‐β apoprotein and intermediate α 2 ‐β 2 tetramers partially saturated with haem.
