Forty patients with pernicious anaemia and polycythaemia vera have been described. In order to determine whether this association was due to an autoimmune mechanism or to chance, the frequency of parietal cell antibodies was estimated in 51 patients with polycythaemia. The incidence of parietal cell antibodies in these patients was similar (8 per cent) to that in a matched control group (6 per cent).
