I would like to make a few comments in an attempt to correlate with known biochemical mechanisms of haem biosynthesis some of the observations which have been described in the preceding papers, for it is clear that there is a disorder in haem formation in the sideroblastic anaemias. There are several phases in haem biosynthesis which may be affected. In the pyridoxine‐responsive types, the fault presumably lies prior to the formation of δ‐aminolaevulic. acid, for the combination of glycine and succinyl Co‐A is brought about by a system requiring pyridoxal or pyridoxal phosphate. In addition, however, Cooper, Webster and Harris (1963) have recently suggested that pyridoxal phosphate is also necessary for the mobilization of iron from mitochondria.
