SUMMARY Fifty‐three patients with a clinical diagnosis of inflammatory acne vulgaris were studied in a fully randomized, single‐blind trial. The patients were treated exclusively with either trimethoprim or oxytetracycline using identical regimes. They were fully assessed on entry into the trial and at the end of 4 weeks and 8 weeks. Both drugs were found to be effective in reducing lesion counts and in improving the grade of severity of acne, and no significant difference in efficacy could be demonstrated.
