SUMMARY In a study of the black tissue grains formed in mycetoma caused by Madurella mycetomi , the evidence pointed to a tanned protein or melanoprotein as the main durable constituent of the grain cement. It appeared likely that the melanizing agent arose from the fungus, while the protein component came from the host. Resistance to treatment was considered to depend on the impenetrability of the cement so produced.
