SUMMARY Smodingium argutum posscsses in its sap a C 17 ‐catechol which brings about a dermatitis of poisonivy type. Mass spectrometry shows that American poison ivy, an oriental sumac and Smodingium all produce in differing amounts a series of related compounds which are responsiblc for skin reactions. History, ecology, botany, histology and treatment are reviewed.
