SUMMARY.— The use of preoperative skin microscopy in the assessment of pigmented lesions of the skin is advocated. The typical surface appearance of 6 histological types of lesion are shown and described. Other aids to diagnosis in this field are discussed, and advantages of a method of this type indicated. The accuracy of the method in giving a preoperative diagnosis on the 8 varieties of lesions described is 84%.
