SUMMARY.— Transferrin‐bound 55 Fe was injected into the skin of 4 normal subjects. The distribution of 55 Fe in autoradiographs from biopsy samples taken over 35 days showed that epidermal iron exchange is confined to the bsal and suprabasal layers. Dermal histiocytes also take up transferrin‐bound iron. These findings showed that iron Ioss by desquamation is negligible.
