SUMMARY.– A new assay method employing the vasconstrictor activity of topically applied steroids is described. The speed, simplicity and reproducibility of the method as a screening system for large numbers of compounds is stressed. The performance of 6 steroids is presented and the statistically significant superiority of fluclorolone acetonide over betamethasone‐17‐valerate, fluandrenalone, beclomethasone propionate, flucortolone caproate and flumethasone pivalate clearly demonstrated. Further possible applications of the assay system such as the croton oil test and vasoconstrictor activity occluded and unoccluded are suggested.
