SUMMARY.— Histochemical investigations on epidermis of adults and foetuses of different ages have demonstrated that there is a close relationship between histidine content and keratohyalin granules. Where the latter are absent the histidine level is low. Only after the development of the second active protein synthesizing layers of the epithelium does keratinization begin in embryonic life.
