SUMMARY.— The hair follicles and sebaceous glands have been studied in serial sections of normal skin and of skin from subjects with acne and with sebaceous hyperplasia. Keratinization of sebaceous ducts can be observed in normal skin. There is no constant correlation between perifollicular infiltrate, follicular obstruction and the development of comedones. Rupture of a cyst wall can occur in follicles with patent ostia. Localized loss of granular layer in the cyst wall indicates a defect in keratinization preceding rupture.
