SUMMARY.— A method to evaluate sunscreens in vitro is described. It employs light, photography and densitometry. The measurements are compared and analysed with the assurance that an equal amount of light bombards the sensor for an equal length of time, passing through a uniformly spread barrier of sunscreening material, to a film of uniform spectral sensitivity. The protection provided from mid‐day sunlight and artificial erythemal light by 9 agents is compared and correlated.
